Foamex vs Correx vs ACM: What's the Difference?

Foamex vs Correx vs ACM: What's the Difference?

04 August 2026

A side-by-side comparison of three popular rigid sign materials, covering appearance, strength, weight, installation and typical use.

Three materials, three different jobs

Foamex, Correx and aluminium composite material are all widely used for printed signs, but they are constructed differently and suit different applications. Choosing by price alone can lead to a sign that is heavier, more temporary or less presentable than expected.

The most useful comparison is based on duration, exposure, appearance, fixing method and how often the sign will be moved.

Foamex: smooth and presentable

Foamex is a rigid PVC foam board with a smooth printable face. It produces a clean finish and feels more substantial than thin plastic or Correx.

It is popular for indoor signs, wall panels, office and warehouse notices, branded information boards and sheltered exterior applications. Foamex can be drilled, screwed, bonded or mounted with appropriate tape. Larger panels should be well supported, particularly where temperature changes or wind exposure are involved.

Correx: light and economical

Correx is a fluted polypropylene sheet. Looking at the edge reveals parallel internal channels, similar in principle to corrugated cardboard but made from plastic.

Its main advantages are low weight, economy and ease of installation. It can be cable-tied to fencing, screwed to temporary structures or fixed to posts. Correx is widely used for short-term construction signs, event signs, property boards and temporary directional signage.

The visible fluted edge and lighter construction give it a more functional appearance, so it is less commonly selected for premium permanent installations.

ACM: strong, flat and professional

ACM consists of thin aluminium skins bonded to a solid core. It is rigid, stable and produces a very flat sign face.

It is well suited to exterior signs, long-term site boards, entrances, building signs and environments where a professional finish is important. ACM can be drilled and mechanically fixed, mounted in frames or installed using suitable sign-fixing systems.

It is heavier and normally more expensive than Correx or Foamex, but its strength and dimensional stability make it a dependable choice for exposed or permanent work.

Quick comparison

Choose Foamex when you want a smooth, substantial panel for indoor or sheltered use. Choose Correx when low weight and temporary economy are the priorities. Choose ACM when the sign needs to remain flat, look professional and perform in a longer-term exterior location.

For temporary fencing, Correx is often the most practical. For reception, office or interior signage, Foamex gives a cleaner display finish. For permanent external site identification, ACM is normally the strongest option.

Fixing and installation

Every rigid sign needs secure fixing. Consider the wall or support material, wind loading, access for drilling and whether the sign will be removed later.

Cable ties are useful for lightweight boards on mesh fencing. Screws and suitable washers spread the load on drilled panels. Adhesive systems require a sound, clean substrate and must be selected for both the sign material and mounting surface. Large or exposed signs may require a frame or professional installation.

Still unsure?

Send us the intended sign size, location, expected duration and a photograph of the fixing surface. We can help compare the options before production, reducing the chance of ordering a material that is either under-specified or unnecessarily expensive.
